Pour / Pore

February 4, 2009 – 10:13 pm

One of the most common mistakes I see is confusing similar-sounding words with different meanings.

From the Feb. 2009 edition of Relish magazine:

“She also subscribed to Bon Appetit and Gourmet magazines, which I would pour over, then sneak home.”

Was that gravy or maple syrup she was pouring over the magazines?

pour – to dispense from a container

poreto read or study attentively

What makes this blooper doubly delicious is that the title “editor” appeared after the author’s name.

As a courtesy, I often refrain from identifying the source of bloopers . . . but when they appear in print,  they’re already out there for the world to see. You publish it, you take responsibility for it.

  2. This is so true! Oh, those homonyms! Hmm, I wonder if this editor works for the Southern Sentinel…. :-)
